I am writing down bits of knowledge that I have relating to Napier Motor Cars in Australia, as we have a Napier 2 seater that we are looking to sell.
The full history of the Napier company is available elsewhere, but the following is pertinent to this vehicle. My understanding is that the vehicle had been driven from Queensland to Melbourne in the 1930’s or 1940’s were it had broken down and was ultimately passed to or purchased by my father with the intention of restoration. From the early 1950’s until now the car has been dry stored in a shed with the engine in pieces, and restoration a long way from being undertaken.
The British-Built Napier is a Colonial model built for export from the UK to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It has a reversed engine, also known as the “Anti-Clockwise Motor”, with the large flywheel at the front behind the radiator. The chassis suspension was higher and wheel diameters were larger to accommodate the rough horse tracks rather than the smooth UK roadways of the time. There is also a full under-pan cover to add some further protection to the engine bay.
The engine block is a 4 cylinder with 2 cylinders per engine block casting. I think this is a 15 hp engine.
